The Asheville Area Arts Council (AAAC) is excited to announce the 9th annual Creative Sector Summit, an event convened since 2010 in partnership with the City of Asheville. “Art in Full Color” will focus on equity and inclusion within the creative community of Buncombe County.
The Opening Reception on Thursday, May 16 from 5:30 – 7:30 pm at the YMI Cultural Center will feature a presentation by Diana Bailey. Bailey will help kick-off the Creative Sector Summit by sharing lessons she has learned from communities, in the U.S. and around the world, who are working to tell more inclusive stories. This presentation is sponsored by the Buncombe County Tourism Development Authority which is dedicating support and resources to an inclusive community process that will honor the rich heritage of Asheville’s African American community.
The conference will resume on Friday, May 17 at the Dr. Wesley Grant Sr. Southside Center from 10:00 am – 4:00 pm. Through presentations, group panels, and open discussion, this portion of the conference highlights local community leaders who will examine the past, present, and future to envision a more equitable and representative arts community. These discussions will help our community better understand the challenges of underrepresented artists and cultural workers, and explore innovative solutions for better collaboration between artists, arts organizations, and their audiences.
Tickets for May 17 are $25 for AAAC members, $35 for non-members with a 15% early bird discount before May 1. There are also a small number of scholarship tickets available. Please contact for more information.
“We are not only excited to broach this topic with our community,” said AAAC Interim Executive Director, Janelle Wienke, “but to work toward creating new long-term solutions that we can help implement. The arts can be used as a profound catalyst for progress especially by elevating change agents and untapped talent.”
