Beat the Stress this Holiday Season!

Let’s face it – the holiday season is magical, but that magic doesn’t come without some added stress. Whether it be finding a new spot for your sneaky elf, deciding what to get for a special someone, or juggling the cost of it all, the holidays come with lots of expectations and little time for true relaxation. If you’re starting to feel overwhelmed as December flies by, you’re not alone.

Making time for physical activity, stretching & relaxation will also help you manage holiday season stress. While it may seem cumbersome to add one more thing to the to-do list, including physical activity in your daily routine will allow you to combat your daily tasks with vigor and actually increase your energy levels. Including physical activity into your routine can also provide a time for you to clear your thoughts and/or meditate - another activity that can reduce stress and increase your well-being.  Yoga, stretching & relaxation are the most obvious forms of physical activity that decrease stress, but for some folks a high-energy break is more beneficial. Walking, running or biking can be a meditative experience, allowing you to disconnect from the busy season and re-connect with nature, fresh air and/or your other priorities in life.

If the idea of adding physical activity or meditation to your schedule sounds more stressful than helpful, perhaps you may want to get started with our evening Yoga classes!  We also have the Somadome meditation pod available at the Mandel Recreation Center if you need some assistance with meditation.

However this season’s holiday stress finds you – I encourage you to find healthy ways to cope with it. Whether it be meditation, a walk, a workout class or a nap – try to choose healthy options to manage the load. Additionally, consider the nutritional choices you’re making and how they’re influencing your mood and energy levels. Attached is an infographic that provides healthier nutrition swaps to consider this holiday season.
