Reminder: Bylaw Regulating Landscape Maintenance Equipment is Now In Effect

A bylaw regulating noise from landscape maintenance equipment in Lexington during certain times is now in effect. The bylaw also places seasonal restrictions on gas-powered leaf blowers (GLB), with an eventual phase-out of GLBs by 2025 for commercial landscapers, and by 2026 for residents.

What to Know

This bylaw adds the following provisions to the Town’s existing Noise Bylaw:

1. Sets new allowed hours for the use of landscape maintenance equipment:

Landscapers

Weekdays, 7 AM to 6 PM

Saturday, 9 AM to 5 PM

Residents

Weekdays, 7 AM to 8 PM

Weekends and legal holidays, 9 AM to 5 PM

2. Seasonal restrictions are imposed on gas-powered leaf blowers:

Gas-powered leaf blower use by any user is limited to the following designated fall and spring cleanup periods:

Spring: March 15 to May 31

Fall: September 15 to December 30

3. The use of gas-powered leaf blowers will be phased out:

Effective March 15, 2025, the use of gas-powered leaf blowers by commercial landscapers will not be allowed. An exemption allows the continued use of wheeled leaf blowers powered by four-stroke engines on lots larger than 1 acre.

Residents will be allowed to use gas-powered leaf blowers on their own property until March 15, 2026.

Volunteer Opportunity: Help Your Neighbors Transition to Clean Heating and Cooling Technology

The Town is launching Lexington HeatSmart, a program to empower residents to adopt clean heating and cooling technology with confidence. We are seeking 6-8 volunteer coaches to work directly with Lexington homeowners to select the appropriate technology, find a contractor, and take advantage of available incentives for heat pumps and other energy retrofits.

All volunteers will go through an in-depth training on heat pump technology and will be supported by experts at Abode Energy Management and the HeatSmart Alliance. Volunteers should be able to commit 3-5 hours per week to the role from October 2022 – October 2023, with the potential to extend.

See the full role description for additional details. To apply, fill out the Interest Form by September 16. All questions can be directed to Maggie Peard, the Town’s Sustainability & Resilience Officer via email, or by phone at 781-698-4540.
