Recreation and Community Programs 2021 Year in Review Video

The Recreation and Community Programs Department is pleased to present its 3rd annual report to their Community Partners, reflecting on the Community Center achievements, initiatives and plans for the coming year.

In 2019, the Community Center Program Advisory Committee was dissolved, and with that a commitment to provide an annual update to our Community Partners.

Due to the pandemic, the Department chose to provide updates through a report in 2020 rather than a roundtable presentation. For the 2021 recap, they have created a video presentation and invite stakeholders to reach out with any suggestions, feedback and initiatives as we continue engage residents of all ages and abilities through health and wellness opportunities.

Help Set the Town’s Zero Waste Priorities

The Town of Lexington recently passed a Zero Waste Resolution at Town Meeting, and is undertaking a Zero Waste Planning process. Zero Waste follows a hierarchy (see image) that focuses first on avoiding the creation of waste before reusing, repairing, recycling, or composting.

Please let us know what you think the priorities should be for policy, programs, and infrastructure that will help get the town, its residents, and businesses, on the path to Zero Waste.

Complete the survey by August 21.

August is Tree Check Month for Asian Longhorned Beetle

The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) is declaring August as “Tree Check Month” for the Asian longhorned beetle (ALB). USDA and its partners are asking residents to check their trees for this invasive insect and the damage it causes. August is the most important time of year to look for the beetle because it is when people are most likely to see adult beetles.

The ALB is an invasive wood-boring beetle that attacks 12 types of hardwood trees in North America, such as maples, elms, buckeyes, birches, and willows. Infested trees do not recover and eventually die.

How You Can Help

The public has a vital role in helping to stop the spread of the ALB and eliminating it from infested areas.

Report it: If you think you found a beetle or tree damage, report it by calling the ALB hotline at 1-866-702-9938 or submitting an online report at www.AsianLonghornedBeetle.com. Try to photograph the ALB or tree damage. If you can, capture the beetle in a durable container and freeze it, which helps preserve the insect for identification. Then report it.

For more information about the ALB and the eradication efforts, visit www.AsianLonghornedBeetle.com. For local inquiries or to speak to your USDA State Plant Health Director, call 1-866-702-9938.

Compost Drop-off Location Change; Space is Still Available in Composting Program

We've partnered with LexSORT (Lexington Shared Organics Recovered Together) to provide a community composting drop-off program. The goal of this free program is to generate interest in composting, in hopes that residents will eventually start composting at their home, or to subscribe to a curbside compost pickup service.

One of the two drop-off locations has been changed:

- Carriage House
Lexington Community Center
39 Marrett Road

- Samuel Hadley Public Services Building
201 Bedford Street

Note: there previously was a drop-off location at 173 Bedford St., but it has been moved to 201 Bedford St.

If you aren't already signed up for the community compost drop-off program, but are interested, you can learn more on our website.
