Lexington received a Tree City USA Growth Award from the Arbor Day Foundation to honor its commitment to effective urban forest management. Only a small percentage of Tree City USA participants earn the Growth Award Honor due to a continued dedication towards building a sustainable community.

A Growth Award is bestowed to a community alongside their Tree City USA recognition for demonstrating environmental improvement and a higher level of tree care.

The Growth Award recognizes major milestones and annual activities in five categories on a point based system to build sustainable community forestry programs over the long term:

About John Frey
John W. Frey, a Lexington resident from 1965 until his death in 2020, was known widely for his diplomatic leadership of a myriad of civic committees in town. A quiet man, he nevertheless was highly skilled in leading people to work harmoniously for the public good.

A professional landscape architect, John’s designs throughout Lexington added greatly to its orderly functions and beautification. In addition to his professional contributions, John was an active member of three Town committees: the Bicycle Advisory, Design Advisory, and Tree Committees.

John led the Tree Committee to develop a Town Bylaw to protect trees from removal and to partner with the Town's Department of Public Works in a wide range of tree protection and maintenance activities.
