Energize the Natural Way
While everyone’s getting excited for fall weather, holidays and routines – the heat is here to remind us, summer isn’t over quite yet! We know the importance of staying hydrated, but between the heat and business of life we sometimes forget and grab whatever is easiest that gives us the energy we desire. Today the Mandel Fitness team is here to educate you on what’s really in that energy drink – and remind you about some natural, healthy ways to increase energy.
REAL * NATURAL * ENERGIZERS
Take a stretch break: Just standing up, reconnecting to posture and engaging muscles can have a huge impact on your ability to focus and be productive.
Stay hydrated: Lethargy is a symptom of de-hydration. Our bodies need water to oxygenate our blood and fuel our brain, yawning is often a sign that our brain needs more oxygen. H2O contains lots of oxygen!
Enjoy a small, nutrient-dense snack: Aim for foods that don’t need added flavoring for a pick-me-up ( i.e. fruits like orange, lemon & lime are energizing and actually natural)
Take a swim! Think of it like splashing water in your face but with an even more energizing effect: jump in the ocean, try a local pool or splash-park.
Take a NAP. That’s right, enjoy some rest. If you’re able to fall asleep in the middle of the day, you probably need it. Listen to your body and take the rest you need.
Energy Drinks often contain:
Caffeine
Excess caffeine can negatively impact health and fitness in many ways: anxiety, blood pressure, heart rate, digestion, sleep
Sugar
We call these “empty calories” because they are not nutrient dense and can contribute to weight gain without offering any nutritional benefits.
“Natural Flavors”
This term is one of my least favorites, as it makes people think the food may be a healthier option because its titled ‘natural’. The bottom line is it has ingredients added solely for the purpose of flavor, and those ingredients are likely questionable at best.
What's What
Our Fitness Professional, John Sutter, put together this quick "What's What" video to highlight the dangers of making energy drinks a habit. Share it with someone you know who could use the info!
