From: Town Of TewksburyCyanobacteria Advisory Lifted at Long Pond
The Massachusetts Department of Public Health (MDPH) advised the Tewksbury Health Department on Wednesday September 29 that Long Pond is safe to reopen for recreational use. The advisory was related to high levels of blue-green algae, also known as cyanobacteria, and associated toxins.
MDPH guidelines require two rounds of samples below guideline levels, collected one week apart, to recommend rescinding an advisory. The samples on Monday September 27th showed levels of 280 cells/ml in the north location, and 130 cells/ml in the south location. The results of both tests showed that levels are below the State guideline of 70,000 cells/ml of the algae. As this is the second low result, the advisory can be lifted.
