Over the past few days, we have heard many requests for us to reinstate some evening hours at the pools.

Traditionally, preseason hours at Beach Memorial Pool have been 12pm-6pm daily starting Memorial Day weekend as the public schools are still in session. Once we are able to staff accordingly, we expand hours to include both Tashua and Beach Memorial Pools for our “regular season.” Due to the maximum occupancy, Tashua Pool is closed to the general public during morning Swim Lessons and Playground Camp during this time. At the end of the summer, when colleges and private schools resume, we limit the hours of operation based on staff availability.

With the nationwide lifeguard shortage, we had difficulty attracting a sufficient number of lifeguards to staff our pools. Accordingly, in order to make ourselves competitive in the 2022 recruitment process, we decided to increase the rate of pay offered, which in turn required a reduction in opening hours of the pools in order to stay within budget. The hours that were removed from the pool schedules reflect the times of lowest attendance in previous years per data collected by the gate monitors. We extracted samplings from 2018, 2019, and 2021 to get a valid representation of the community’s actual utilization.  Any adjustments that were made for the 2022 schedule were those that would have the least impact to our swimming community.  

That being said, in recent days the public has asked to reinstate some evening hours. Working with the First Selectman’s Office to make the necessary adjustments to our budget, we are able to add additional hours, complying with industry standards of staffing. We don’t anticipate the ability to add any additional evening hours other than the hours below from June 27 through August 12. The end of season hours will again be adjusted in early August, and will be based on remaining lifeguard staffing resulting from college and private school student departures.
