Town of Westport - Piping Plovers Are Back

Government and Politics

May 14, 2022

From: Town of Westport

To all beach goers!! There is extensive Piping Plover fencing on Cherry and Webb Beach (the town beach).  These areas are off limits to ANY activity.  Please respect the bird nesting area while enjoying the town beach. Piping Plovers are State and Federally protected shorebirds, as their classification is “Threatened” – meaning that they are likely to become endangered.  They are susceptible to human disturbance because they are ground nesting birds that make their home on open, sandy shorelines.  By law, the Town is required to limit vehicular and pedestrian access near the chicks.  At the direction of the Massachusetts Audubon Society, barriers have been installed preventing vehicles, and symbolic fencing was installed to prevent interaction with the birds.

Thank you for your cooperation.
