Art in the Outdoors

Two sculptures have been placed or are underway at two different Greenway entrances along the corridor between Boone and Blowing Rock.

The first sculpture was placed on the Middle Fork Greenway at Sterling Creek Park on Highway 321 between Boone and  Blowing Rock. The mosaic piece was designed by local artist Cindy Michaud and was installed in November. This sculpture is the first in the “Art in the Outdoors” initiative that will also include murals along the Greenway.

The second sculpture, “Home,” was created by sculptor Zach Smith Johnson and glass artist Fred Mead, using steel salvaged from the old Elkland School in Todd, NC. This sculpture complements the aesthetic of the rusted steel bridges that flank the parking lot at the Middle Fork Greenway Trailhead on Hwy 321, where it will be installed. The concrete pad is already in place, thanks to a generous donation by Chandler Concrete. - Keep an eye out for more progress. Zach Smith Johnson generously contributed this piece to encourage our public art endeavors.

The project is funded through the generous support of the Appalachian Regional Commission’s Conservation Fund. This grant provided seed money to help us kickstart the "Art in the Outdoors" public art initiative in collaboration with the Blue Ridge Conservancy and the Economic Development Commission.
