We Put Policyholders First

Government and Politics

December 19, 2022

From: Florida Governor Ron DeSantis

Floridians,

This week, I delivered testimony to the House Appropriations Committee during special session to support the Legislature's efforts to reform Florida's insurance industry. I support this legislation, specifically because it puts the policyholder first by eliminating one-way attorney fees for property insurance lawsuits, forcing insurance companies to become more responsive, and fighting fraud by prohibiting the assignment of benefits (AOBs) under property insurance policies. I’m happy to report that the bill made it through the legislative process and has been signed by the Governor. A huge thank you to the Governor, Speaker of the House, and President of the Senate for seeing the wisdom to call for this special session and for working to get this critical legislation passed.

On Dec 16th, I had the honor to share great news from the State's Division of Bond Finance - the 2022 State Debt Report. According to the report, Florida's economy is in excellent shape and continues to flourish. Thanks to the leadership of Governor DeSantis and the Legislature, we have decreased our state debt by $1.3 billion, while increasing our reserves to an unprecedented $19.7 billion.

Lastly, on Monday evening, I recognized members of Florida’s firefighting community for their outstanding accomplishments in the fire service industry during the 2022 Fire Service Awards. The following morning, I hosted the 'Ringing of the Bell' ceremony to honor Florida's fallen firefighters. These heroes served honorably and answered the call but did not come home. They deserve our deepest gratitude, and it was an honor to be able to recognize their distinguished heroism.
