Friends of the Library Short Story Hour

Like an old-fashioned radio hour, participants will listen to a classic short story, followed by a discussion. No preparation is necessary.

Anyone who has participated in earlier Short Story Hours is already registered and will receive invitations to upcoming sessions. Contemporary Galleries: More Than What Meets the Eye

How do contemporary artists represent themselves and their community? We’ll virtually travel to Chelsea and Tribeca to look at six contemporary artists: Hope Gangloff, Omar Ba, Yashua Klos, Chiffon Thomas, Do Ho Suh, Steve Locke and see how they explore portraiture, transformation, and displacement. The range of media includes painting, sculpture, woodcut, and public art. Don’t miss this outing!

A Musical Introduction to the Final Revival of Opal & Nev 

Sunday, April 23

3:00 - 4:00 pm in the Community Room

The Final Revival of Opal & Nev by Dawnie Walton is this year's adult selection for All CT Reads.

This musical introduction to the novel will be performed by pianist Joseph H. Bush, and actress, singer, dancer Chavon Hampton, both popular Connecticut artists. The program will include a range of thematic music to accompany several scenes from the book.

Space is limited and reservations are required. Please note: Program is appropriate for children over the age of 12.

The Trackers by Charles Frazier  Commissioned to create a mural representing Dawes, Wyoming, for their new Post Office, Val Welch, a painter in Depression-era America, stays with a wealthy art lover, his wife and a mysterious elder cowboy where he turns up secrets that could spark formidable changes for all of them.

Sisters of the Lost Nation by Nick Medina  As girls start going missing amidst strange and sinister happenings in the reservation's casino, including her little sister, Anna Horn, an outcast struggling with her place on the rez, must confront demons old and new as she hunts for answers.

The Wager by David Grann  A new account of the Wager Mutiny, in which a shipwrecked and starving British naval crew abandoned their captain on a desolate Patagonian island, emphasizes the extreme hardships routinely faced by eighteenth-century seafarers as well as the historical resonance of the dramatic 1741 event.

Homecoming by Kate Morton  Called home to care for her grandmother after a fall, Jess, a journalist, discovers a book chronicling the police investigation into an old unsolved murder that has a shocking connection to her family.
