Wilson Applauds House Passage of Iran Resolution

Washington, D.C. – Congressman Joe Wilson issued the following statement on the House passage of a resolution condemning the Iranian regime's human rights abuses against the brave women and men of Iran peacefully demonstrating in more than 133 cities. Led by Representatives Claudia Tenney (R-NY), Josh Gottheimer (D-NJ), and Foreign Affairs Committee Chairman Michael McCaul (R-TX), the resolution passed the House by a vote of 420-1.

In addition to expressing support for the courageous Iranian protestors calling for their freedoms, this resolution condemns the brutal beating and death of Mahsa Amini, as well as the violent suppression by the Iranian regime of women and men participating in the current demonstrations. The passage reaffirmed the bipartisan commitment to the Iranian people against the despotic Ayatollah and his brutal regime.

“I appreciate that the House of Representatives passed this important bipartisan resolution by a 99% margin, standing with the people of Iran. I was particularly grateful to serve as one of the original co-sponsors of this legislation and to speak on its behalf during the House Foreign Affairs Committee Markup during the 117th Congress.

“How much longer do the people of Iran have to suffer? How many more Iranians have to be killed until the world takes action? The people of Iran have waited far too long for freedom. Every day we hear reports of innocent protesters being killed and women assaulted. The regime has jailed over 18,000 people and is slowly executing them in a test to the international community. For over four decades, the regime in Tehran has violated the basic rights of Iranians and looted the wealth of the Iranian people. The whole world is now witnessing a struggle between democracies with Rule of Law and authoritarian regimes with Rule of Gun. The time has come to take concrete measures to stand with the Iranian people – sanctioning the officials involved in the crackdown and ending all talks regarding a new Iran nuclear deal which will just give billions of dollars to the regime that, as we have seen before, uses those resources against its own people and others in the region, making the crisis worse. Congress must continue to stand with the people of Iran until the regime falls,” said Congressman Wilson.

“The murderous regime in Iran continues its violent crackdown on its citizens’ rights and civil liberties,” said Congresswoman Tenney. “Today, the House reaffirmed with one voice our commitment to support these brave protestors, who are more resolved than ever to fight this regime. These courageous Iranians are demanding a government that respects their rights at home, stops funding terrorism abroad and makes peace with its neighbors. They are demanding a future built on freedom, justice, the rule of law, and prosperity. This resolution makes clear that the U.S. House of Representatives stands with them and that the United States will continue to do all it can to hold the regime, which is the world’s leading state sponsor of terrorism, accountable.”

Today, Congressman Wilson joined his House colleagues speaking at a press conference commending the passage of the resolution.
