The spooky season has arrived, and with it our autumn line-up of library events!  This month, we're looking forward to a dry ice science exhibition, puppet storytimes, STEM exploration activities, Spanish storytelling, and much more - as well as our annual Pumpkin Palooza!  Our full programming calendar can be found below - we'd love for you to join us!
In-Person Events:
In the interest of social distancing, space is limited and registration is required for most children’s events.  Registration links for our programs are located on the library's Events Calendar (https://woburnpubliclibrary.org/events-calendar/) .

Masks are no longer required in the library. However, masks are encouraged in the Children's Room, especially for those who are unvaccinated, have a weakened immune system, or live with a highly vulnerable person.

Join us for Pumpkin Palooza!
Tuesday October 25th (6:00 pm - 8:00 pm)

Stop by on Tuesday, October 25th to trick-or-treat around the library and meet the Sanderson Sisters (of Hocus Pocus fame).  We also encourage you to bring a jack-o-lantern to help us light up the library - we will provide battery-powered tea lights.

Through Me To You Puppetry (https://www.throughmetoyou.com/)  invites you to join Newton and the gang for some storytime fun!  Newton and his puppet friends take turns reading stories and singing songs with the kids.  At the end of the show, the kids are invited to say hi to Newton.

Homeschool News
Wednesdays
10:30 am - 12:00 pm

Join us for an exciting and engaging child-led activity where kids will work together to produce a weekly newsletter.  A facilitator will provide weekly themes, brainstorming support, and resources.  Each child will be given the freedom to develop an idea and produce a piece that matches their areas of interest.

Kids can work on projects individually or in small teams. The facilitator will work with parents to help supplement their homeschooling goals.  The facilitator will also provide any adaptations needed to support children during the activity.

School-age children of all abilities are welcome. Parents are required to remain at the library during the program.

Crazy-8's Math Club (8-Week Series)

Join Bedtime Math?s Crazy 8s (https://crazy8sclub.org/) , a totally new kind of math club where you?ll build stuff, toss beach balls, make amazing mazes, and more!  You?ll have a blast with mischief-making activities like Funny Money, UFO Landing, and Glow-in-the-Dark City.

This is a continuation of Crazy 8's Season 1 for grades 3-5.  If you did not complete Season 1, you are still welcome to join!

Toddler Time
Friday October 7th

Bring your toddlers to the library to play, read books, color, and socialize with other families.  No registration required.  Drop in and hang out with us!

Read to a Therapy Dog
Fridays (October 7th, 14th, 28th)
Thursday October 13th
4:00 pm - 5:00 pm

Young readers are invited to spend 10 minutes reading aloud to dogs from the Therapy Dogs International Program.  Registration is not required for this event - 10 minute time-slots with a dog will be assigned on a first-come, first-served basis.  We will try to accommodate as many children as we can without overwhelming the dogs.  Siblings and parents are welcome to join.

Family Craft: Beaded Pumpkins

Use pipe cleaners and pony beads to make a pretty pumpkin decoration.  Bead with traditional pumpkin colors or make it your own!

The whole family is welcome to come, but please be advised that beading may be too difficult for little ones.

Spanish Fun Program

Whether you're interested in learning Spanish or you're already fluent, you will enjoy this fun, bilingual program!  Miss Esther will lead you through vocabulary-building activities, music, and games.  Best for ages 5 and under. Siblings are welcome. Registration is required.

Portuguese Fun Program
Saturday October 15th
11:30 am - 12:00 pm

Join Miss Esther as we dance and sing with the music from the highest-selling Brazilian female singer Xuxa!  We will also have fun playing games with the parachute while you learn and practice Portuguese.

Best for ages 2-5.

Spanish Fun Storytelling & Craft:
The Legend of the Inca Empire's Origin
Saturday October 15th (3:00 pm - 4:00 pm)

Celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month with bilingual storytelling for the whole family!  After the story, we will reinforce Spanish vocabulary from the story as we sing, play, and do a craft.  This program is for both those who speak Spanish and those who want to learn.  No previous knowledge required.

This program is facilitated by Esther Gomez and Karina Liendo, two passionate entrepreneurs born and raised in Mexico and Peru respectively.  Esther has more than 20 years of experience teaching Spanish to children in the Massachusetts area.  Karina has traveled to 30 countries, including 9 in Latin America, and is a facilitator being trained as a storyteller by the Escuela de Cuentacuentos in Madrid, Spain.

Family Craft: Spiderweb Painting

Use crayon and watercolor paint to make some cool spiderweb art.  Please come dressed for a mess!

Sensory-Friendly Storytime
Saturday October 22nd
10:30 am - 11:15 am

Join Miss Kristine for 20 minutes of gentle songs and stories followed by sensory playtime.  Fidgeting and roaming are welcome.

Intended for children who have a hard time in large groups or have other sensory sensitivities.  Book choices geared toward preschool interest level.  Siblings are welcome.

Dry Ice Show by Talewise
Saturday October 22nd
3:00 pm - 3:45 pm

Join Talewise (https://www.talewise.com/)  on a quest to discover the ‘coolest’ thing in science: dry ice!  Volunteers from the audience will help us conduct several science experiments as we explore the wondrous effects of dry ice!  The science experiments are tied together by a fun, interactive tale called “Dragons & The Ice Sorceress,” where the entire audience will help the performer tell the story — you’ll even get to decide what happens next!

Recommended for ages 3-11.

Sound Play Music
Thursday October 27th

Dance, move, sing, and groove with Sound Play Music!  Sound Play is an award-winning, action-packed, joy-filled music and movement class for children from newborn through age six and their grown-ups.  Come jam with us!

Spanish Fun Storytelling and Craft:
El Día de los Muertos
Saturday October 29th (2:30 pm - 3:30 pm)

Rookie Book Club
Monday October 24th

Join Miss Janice for the beginner’s book club for children who are reading at a K to 2nd grade level.  This month's book is Aunt Eater's Mystery Halloween by Doug Cushman.  Copies of the book will be available at the Children’s Room desk.  Children (age 5 +) who are not reading independently yet can have the book read to them.  We will talk about the story and do some related early reading activities.

BeTween the Lines Book Club

Join our book club for tweens (approximately grades 3-5). This month we'll chat about Séance Tea Party by Reimena Yee and decorate bookmarks.  You can get a copy of the book at the Children's Desk.

Navigating the College Search with Dr. Karen Droisen
Monday October 3rd
7:00 pm - 8:00 pm

Few high-school activities are as stress-inducing as the college search.  With the start of the school year, it is time for families to tackle this challenge.  Dr. Karen Droisen, experienced tutor and college counselor, will provide a chronological overview of the application timeline, from developing the first school list, to writing the personal statement, to clicking the “submit” button.  By the end of the presentation, the application process will be demystified and laid out as a manageable and exciting journey.

Teen D&D: Dragon Heist
Thursdays (October 6th, 13th, 27th)
5:00 pm - 6:30 p

A new campaign is coming to the Woburn Library!  This fall, join us as we take on the adventure of Waterdeep: Dragon Heist!  This is an adventure designed to take your characters from level 1-5.

Teen D&D will run every Thursday starting September 15th; we hope you are able to make the majority of the meetings.  Dice and premade character sheets provided if needed, though you are welcome to bring your own.

New to D&D?  That's ok; whether you have only played a few times or have never rolled a 20-sided dice before, this is a supportive environment to learn the rules and have fun.

Register ONCE for all sessions in the month of September.

Teen Anime Club

Join us to discuss your favorite anime, manga, & Japanese culture.  We will watch episodes of our favorite shows and even try the Pocky flavor of the month.
This events is for students in 6-12th grade.

Teen Advisory Board (TAB)
Monday October 17th

Help decide what happens at YOUR library!  Do you have concerns, comments, or ideas for teen events and programming?  Join the monthly Teen Advisory Board (TAB) meeting to have your voice heard.  Snacks will be provided, and you can earn volunteer hours for your participation.

TAB is for students entering 7-12 grade.

Murder at the Old Cadbury Mansion: A Murder Myster Party
Thursday October 20th
6:00 - 8:30 pm

The Teen Advisory Board invites you to a night of murder, mystery, and mayhem!

Our historic library has been transformed into the Cadbury Estate, an 18th-century manor with a tragic history and many reports of malevolent ghosts haunting the property.  Are you brave enough to attend a party at the creepy manor, and are you clever enough to solve the mystery at the heart of the Cadbury Estate?

Once registered for the murder mystery party, you will be contacted by the library to choose a character.  Please be sure to use an email other than your school email and make sure you receive & reply to that email.  We highly encourage you to dress as your character!  Let Erin the Teen Librarian know if you run into any trouble at [email protected].

Iris Book Club

Are you part of or an ally of the LGBTQ+ community?  Are you trying to find more inclusive novels?  Do you wish you had more queer friends?  If so, join the Iris Book Club, an LGBTQ+ book club for teens!

Our October book is Cemetery Boys by Aiden Thomas.  Copies are available at the Circulation desk.
