W&FLC is Changing the Lives of Women in Our Community

Participant Nancy* came to Women & Family Life Center (W&FLC) and was very worried about her personal safety and shared that her husband was abusive. Nancy was in a challenging situation because she has no family in CT and was financially dependent on her husband. When Nancy initially contacted the Center she was set up with a one-on-one appointment with a Referral Navigator in our Guided Assistance Program. Together they created a plan to start moving Nancy's life in a more positive and independent direction by providing resources and steps to:

-Connected her with the Umbrella Center for Domestic Violence to provide support and help put a restraining order in place

-Connected her with an attorney through our Lawyer Time program to begin her divorce process

-Enrolled her in the Center's divorce support group, Restart program

-Resourced temporary housing for her to move into a safe place

-Provided basic needs and resources for food and clothing

-Applied for unemployment, provided resume writing resources and set up Husky health benefits during her job search

-Applied for and received SNAP benefits

“When I was in need of help in the most critical time of my life, W&FLC was the only place that supported me and when I say the only place I really truly mean it. I knocked on many doors and only this organization took me in and helped me.

The staff are now my family and I will never forget what they did for me.”

Today, Nancy is in a much more stable place in her life now. Although her case is still in court, she is living on her own, she has maintained steady part time employment and is actively looking for a full time job.

Working Together in Our Community

On July 14th The Car Care Clinic hosted "Street Smart," a free community event attended by over 60 women from the CT Shoreline to learn how to change a tire, check fuel levels in a car and many more helpful tips on how to maintain a car. The Marketplace at Guilford Food Center provided a delectable assortment of appetizers for everyone to enjoy along and the evening ended with an exciting raffle prize drawing for gift bags filled with items donated by local businesses and automotive suppliers.

W&FLC is so grateful for our community partners and for the opportunity to spread awareness about our Center's work and services. Thank you to The Care Care Clinic for hosting this event to inform and inspire women in our community. Thank you to everyone who bought raffle tickets and made donations, because of you we received $1,721that will help support our work. Together we are stronger!
