The undersea community of Bikini Bottom is the place to be this month! Our much-anticipated production of The SpongeBob Musical opens on Friday, August 11th. The show will run through Sunday, August 27 with performances on Fridays at 7:30 p.m. and Saturdays/Sundays at 2:00 p.m.

Did you Know?

This show is for kids AND adults. Whether you are familiar with the Nickelodeon animated series that the musical was born from ("SpongeBob SquarePants") makes no difference. Even those new to this incredibly funny character and his wacky and wonderful friends, will be drawn in by the original score. A variety of well-known musical artists including David Bowie, Steven Tyler and Joe Perry of Aerosmith, John Legend, Cyndi Lauper, and Sara Bareilles have lent their talents to make this one of the most musically enjoyable productions you will see this season!

We've been running some fun posts on our Facebook and Instagram pages to share more about the show. Our series, "Gary on the Go" has been highlighting SpongeBob's pet snail, Gary, and what he's been up to while he prepares to take the stage. Be sure to keep an eye out for Gary!

Content Advisory:

The SpongeBob Musical is a family-friendly production featuring mild language, cartoonish violence, and positive themes of friendship and perseverance, but beware, it may not be suitable for crusty old barnacles and crabby fish who hate to laugh and have fun.

Show Biz Kidz Wrap-up

Our annual Show Biz Kidz performances, titled "Broadway, Here I Come" were a great success. All 80 students got their chance to shine in the spotlight on our historic stage!

Congratulations to each and every onel! See a short recap video of the performances Here.

We can't wait for next year!

Congratulations to Education Director, Andrea St. Clair!

Our Education Director, Andrea St. Clair, recently participated in the iTheatrics Summer Teaching Academy in New York City! This workshop was designed for seasoned pros and new directors alike who are looking to get hands-on artistic training in new techniques for working with young people in the world of musical theatre.

The iTheatrics Summer Teaching Intensive emphasizes experiential learning, active skill building, best practices from the field, and an overall focus on storytelling. During her time with iTheatrics, the company that adapts the Broadway Junior series for Music Theatre International (MTI) and sponsors the annual global Junior Theatre Festival events, Andrea got to watch the Between the Lines JR. workshop – a title that may end up being licensed and on stages like our own in the near future!

Pictured is Andrea (left) with iTheatrics Founder and CEO, Timothy Allen McDonald (right). We are so thrilled with how this training will assist Andrea in elevating our Education Program even further! Congratulations!

Gene A. Chesley Awards for Theatrical Excellence
Sunday, August 20th at 7:00 p.m.
Reception following in Heritage Plaza

This will be a very special Chesley Awards program as we have Bob Cooner - Actor, Director, Playwright - directing the program.

From Bob:

I'm honored to take on the responsibility of directing the 33rd Annual Gene A. Chesley Awards ceremony this year. This year's program will focus on the theme "We Are Family." Of course, we like to think of all of those who take part in the many programs and activities at the Woodland Opera House as being a part of the Opera House "family," whether as performers, directors, musicians, choreographers, stage managers, lighting/set/costume designers, technical crew members, staff, ushers, students, teachers, audience members, etc.

All of us who contribute to the ongoing success of our beloved historic theatre are part of that big, welcoming family. Additionally, there are quite a few real-life families who regularly participate in a variety of ways at the Opera House. At this year's Chesley Awards, some of those families will be featured as presenters during the ceremony. The program will also include performances from the plays and musicals that our patrons saw on the Opera House stage during the 2022-23 season, and many of those songs and scenes also connect to the "family" theme.
