Author Event:
Black Flags, Blue Waters
by Eric Jay Dolan

Thursday, August 11, 2:00 p.m.
At the Yarmouth Senior Center,
528 Forest Road, Yarmouth

Set against the backdrop of the Age of Exploration, Black Flags, Blue Waters reveals the history of American piracy’s “Golden Age”—from the late 1600s through the early 1700s—when lawless pirates plied the coastal waters of North America and beyond.

Bestselling author Eric Jay Dolin will tell us of the star pirates of this period, like Blackbeard, Captain Kidd, and
Edward Low and of the pirates’ many enemies, including colonial governor John Winthrop and evangelist Cotton Mather. This event at the Yarmouth Senior Center, 528 Forest Road, Yarmouth, is free to the public. This author event is sponsored by the Yarmouth Town Libraries as part of our Oceans of Possibilities-themed Summer Reading program and funded by the South Yarmouth Library Association and the West Yarmouth Library Association. Books will be available for purchase and author signing. Please plan to join us and bring a friend or neighbor.

Book Discussion:
Chances Are by Richard Russo

Wednesday, August 17, at 11:00 a.m.
South Yarmouth Library Gazebo
An excellent tale, told by a popular author –the story of three old college buddies who reunite decades after their graduation and discuss the mystery of what happened to the young woman they all seemed to have fallen in love with way back when. She disappeared just before her wedding, and they were the last people she spent time with before going missing. The reunion on Martha’s Vineyard gives each the chance to relive his youth and continue pondering the girl’s disappearance, while they enjoy another summer visit to the Island. Sue Loveland, of the Library Board, will guide this discussion. Books are available at each town library and on Libby for downloading. If the weather is bad, the book discussion will take place in the Leonard meeting room at the South Yarmouth Library.

Farewell, Connie Marr
Youth Services Supervisor

Our formidable and creative Youth Services Librarian, Connie Marr, has announced her retirement, effective August 15. Connie has been with the Town of Yarmouth for 10 years, starting as a part-time Children’s Room Assistant and working her way to a leadership role in Youth Services, providing programs and resources for children from birth to age 18. We wish her the best of luck in this new chapter in her life.

The Library Planning Committee Seeks New Members

The Library Planning Committee (LPC) is looking for new members. The group typically meets on a Tuesday evening each month, over Zoom, starting at 5:30 p.m. We are currently working on a Request for Proposals (RFP) with our Town Administration, for consultation on community input sessions, surveying and garnering additional information from the public regarding what is important to you about the library – what you wish for, and how we can satisfy community needs and wants in your library:  good information sharing, community gatherings, reading, learning and growing strong together. If you are interested in the LPC, please stop by and visit Library Director Jane Cain at the South Yarmouth Library, or call her:  508-760-4820, ext. 1312.
