The 2023 Youngstown Area Jewish Film Festival takes participants on a cinematic, cultural journey that depicts a broad spectrum of Jewish life. The films shown come from all over the world, providing diverse audiences with a glimpse into the Jewish experience. We are excited to bring you eight outstanding films this festival season. Treat yourself to the richness of Jewish life projected through the lens of modern filmmakers.

All films will be shown in the JCC Multi-Purpose room unless otherwise specified. Thanks to the 2023 Screening Committee: Bob Rawl, Kandy Rawl, Lynda Bumback, Mike Shepherd, and Nancy Burnett.

Schedule Of Events

October 15, 2023

1:00 p.m. - The Prince Of Egypt - Animated

In this animated retelling of the Book of Exodus, Egyptian Prince Moses (Val Kilmer), upon discovering his roots as a Jewish slave, embarks on a quest to free his people from bondage. When his plea is denied by his brother Rameses (Ralph Fiennes), the new pharaoh, a series of horrific plagues strike Egypt. Moses finally leads the Israelites to freedom by parting the Red Sea and drowning the Egyptian army. God then gives Moses the Ten Commandments, a list of rules for his people to live by.

4:00 p.m. - The Fabelmans -  Drama

Growing up in post-World War II era Arizona, young Sammy Fabelman aspires to become a filmmaker as he reaches adolescence, but soon discovers a shattering family secret and explores how the power of films can help him see the truth.

4:00 p.m. - Gentleman's Agreement - Drama - Romance

When journalist Phil Green (Gregory Peck) moves to New York City, he takes on a high-profile magazine assignment about antisemitism. In order to truly view things from an empathetic perspective, he pretends to be a Jew and begins to experience many forms of bigotry, both firsthand and through a Jewish friend, Dave Goldman (John Garfield). Phil soon falls in love with beautiful Kathy Lacy (Dorothy McGuire), but their relationship is complicated by his unusual endeavor.

2:00 p.m. - Tango Shalom- Family Comedy

A tango dancer asks a rabbi to enter a dance competition, but there's one big problem -- he's not allowed to touch her due to his Orthodox beliefs. However, since the prize money will save his school from bankruptcy, they work together to develop a plan to enter the competition without sacrificing his faith.
