Abingdon First Assembly Of God

835 West Martin
309-462-2235

History:

In September of 1941, James and Mollie Hunt moved to Abingdon. They opened their home for Sunday services. A Bible class was taught by Wilma Carter, James Hunts' sister. On April 16, 1942, this home church became part of the newly established Assemblies of God church on the corner of Monmouth and Main streets. The pastor was Roy Meredith.

Revivals were numerous in the early years. God's blessing was upon the church. In 1953 an expansion was necessary to add classroom space. The work was completed in the 1960's, and the church moved to Martin Street. Work began in the summer of 1966 on the new building. In 1969, the new building was dedicated in this current location.

Since 1941, God has been mightily at work in the lives of the people of First Assembly. We praise Him, unashamed to be called his children. We are glad to be known as Pentecostal and ever grateful to our Lord Jesus Christ who loved us and gave Himself for us that we might receive the free gift of Salvation.
