Anthony Church of Christ

121 East Washington

History of the Anthony Church :

On November 2, 1942, a small group of Christians assembled themselves in the home of Mrs. Ansel Tower, thus, beginning the church of Christ in Anthony, Kansas, U.S.A. A gospel meeting was held by H. R. Atchison of Wellington, Kansas, to help the young congregation start growing. Following the gospel meeting, the church met in the local American Legion building and, for a time, in another building on West Main.

In October 1944, the church purchased a building at 323 North Springfield. There were many souls added to the church in the years which followed. In fact, so many became Christians that it soon became apparent that the building would be too small. On May 27, 1947, the lots upon which the present building exists were purchased. In November of that same year, construction began with many of the members providing the labor. The building was completed in December of 1948 with the first service being held on the 26th of that month. On January 30, 1949, a dedication service was conducted with Bill Thompson of Lufkin, Texas, preaching.
