Byrd Chapel United Methodist Church

Venable Road Rt 601

Byrd Chapel United Methodist Church at Kent's Store, Virginia was organized in 1816 following a series of Camp Meetings previously held by Methodist leaders in surrounding areas. It was formerly known as Hughes Meeting House. In 1853 the congregation of Hughes Meeting House moved to another location on the waters of the Little Byrd Creek and built a new frame sanctuary. Shortly thereafter, the name of our Church was changed to Byrd Chapel and we were put on a 7 church charge known as the Fluvanna Circuit. However, due to bad roads and the need of a more central location the Church was again moved to our present location on State Highway No. 601. Byrd Chapel continued to grow and after much hard work and planning the Formal Opening and Consecretion Service for our new brick building was held on May 22, 1955. On August 12, 1962 Bishop Paul N. Barber delivered the Dedication Sermon.

Our annual Homecoming Day is on the second Sunday in August and on that day in 1983 we had Groundbreaking Services for our parsonage on Route 604. The land was a gift from a great grandson of one of the founders of the Church. In 1994 an Educational Wing was added to the west side of the church to accommodate the various classes and activities.Just east of our church, many loved ones who served the Church faithfully over the years lie resting in our perpetual care cemetery.Church Cemetery Today we are the sister church with Macedonia, the two churches comprise the Byrd Chapel-Macedonia Charge and we share a Pastor.Through the years of fellowship and service at Byrd Chapel, we realize that changes do take place, but the strength of any Church past, present, or future rests in the faith and commitment of its people to the great commission given to us by our dear Savior, Jesus Christ "Go ye into all the world and preach the good news to all of creation." Mark 16:15
