5355 Carrsville Highway

History :

In 1900, Mrs. Gertrude Bryant became the first teacher of Carrsville. She signed her first contract for $30.00 per month and taught classes from 9:00 a. m. until 4:00 p.m. each day with 60 minutes allowed for recess. Besides teaching, Mrs. Bryant's duties included sweeping the floors, making the fires with the three tons of coal that was provided to heat the building and maintaining the grounds. In the beginning only one of the two rooms in the school was used to teach grades one through seven.
In 1921, Miss Gertrude Criser became the principal of Carrsville School, a position she held for 44 years. Miss Criser's dream was to build a new brick building to house the students of Carrsville. This dream became a reality when students moved in to the new facility in 1924. This building housed Carrsville Elementary Students until June of 1995 when this building was demolished and a new facility was erected.
During the early years, wagons were used to transport children to school. The driver and owner was paid at the rate of $1.00 per day for a single wagon and $2.00 per day for a double wagon. In 1929, the first school busses were used for any student who lived 2 miles or more from the school. The drivers received $1.15 per day for their labor.
Carrsville became a high school and graduated its first students in 1922 and remained a high school until 1954 when students in the ninth grade and above were sent to Windsor High School. Since then, this school has remained an elementary school. Comunity involvement and student pride has kept Carrsville School strong and productive from its humble beginning until present time.
