About Us

Caruthers, California is an unincorporated town located in Fresno County. The town of Caruthers is small, approximately 2500, and is surrounded by vineyards and orchards. The community is centered about 13 miles south of Fresno, which is the sixth largest city in California. Caruthers Unified School District has a pre-school, an elementary school, a high school, a continuation and community day school, and an adult school. These schools serve approximately 1500 students. The high school, Caruthers High, serves the students promoted to the ninth grade from Raisin City Elementary School, Monroe Elementary School, and Alvina Charter Elementary School in addition to students from Caruthers Elementary School. The great majority of our families are employed in the fields of agriculture and most speak a language other than English at home. The high school held its first classes in 1914 and Caruthers Elementary began in 1921. Several of the original buildings of the early years of Caruthers are still in use on the main street. A descendant of one of he first school board trustees serves the district as a board member today.
