Christ Episcopal Church Of Alameda

1700 Santa Clara Avenue

About Our Church

Founded in 1871, Christ Church is the third oldest church and the only Episcopal congregation in Alameda.

We are members of the Diocese of California which is celebrating 150 years of continual operation in Northern California. As such, we are also members of The Episcopal Church in the USA and the Worldwide Anglican Communion.

The first Christ Church building was erected close to the business district in Alameda, and was relocated to a residential area in 1888. The building later became the Parish Hall when a new, larger church was constructed in 1891.

This sanctuary stood for many years until an arson fire destroyed it in December, 1960. The third church building, the one we use today, was built and completed in 1962.

While the 1960 fire rendered the church a total loss, several items were salvaged and are part of today's structure. You will notice that the ornate wooden pulpit still bears burn marks. Also, the two wooden angels above the choir were original a single carving, now cut into two parts and repurposed.

Statement of Beliefs

We are called by our belief in Jesus Christ to preach and live the Gospel as a Parish and as individuals.

Offering a place of worship, spiritual sanctuary, renewal and fellowship for all who enter.

Striving to serve those who need both in our Parish and in the greater community.

Practicing our faith in a cordance with the tradition and discipline of the Episcopal Church.
