Christus Lutheran Church Of Greenville
Mission:
Christus is a growing body of Christians who share the good news of God's grace with all people through courageous love with a purpose.
Christus Lutheran Church was formed as a mission congregation of the Evangelical Lutheran Church of America in 1992, under the pastoral direction of mission developer, Pastor Charles Bose. In late 1994 the congregation began to develop plans to acquire a new piece of land for a new church. In the early winter of 1995, two committees were charged with evaluating over twenty potential building sites for the future church. On September 25 1995, the congregation voted to acquire the Norman Julius property consisting of thirty seven acres of rolling farmland located at the intersection of Highways 45 and Julius Drive in the township of Greenville, Wisconsin. On April 20, 1997, the congregation gathered at the building site to celebrate the ground breaking. The “Planting” as the celebration was referred to, consecrated the land with joyful sounds, prayer, planting of trees and dedication speeches such as the following:
When you step back a bit, you see a beautiful tapestry being woven by our congregation. The tapestry rich in the color and texture of dreams, ambitions, energies and efforts is woven among and through us with loving unseen hands. It is beautiful.
Part of that tapestry is the land. Rich, flowing and abundant in God’s eye long before we arrived. Molded through the ages, compressed by ice, contoured by water, forested in nature’s beauty and foraged by the creatures of the kingdom.
Since the early 1870’s this land has had one family as its caretaker. The Julius family have been good stewards of the land. Settling Wisconsin during the great immigration era, enduring hardships of a new land and passing the farm down through the generations.
On October 12, 1995 two members of the Christus congregation met with Norman and Virginia Julius to make an offer to purchase thirty acres of land. In a handshake, across the kitchen table of the Julius homestead, the land passed to the Christus congregation. The dreams, ambitions, energies and efforts that followed this land passed on to a new settler.
Christus selected this site as the home for its new church. May we also be good stewards of the land and good friends to our neighbors.
