WHO WE ARE

Cocoon Theatre is an educationally-minded, non-profit, member-based, performing arts organization dedicated to bringing fine visual & performing arts classes, workshops & performances to all ages. With an emphasis on exploring the creative process, we choose thought-provoking, relevant material, with a wish to foster the growth of the individual, and to share in the building of sound communities and a strong world society.

OUR MISSION

Our mission is to give ourselves to the creation of safe environments and opportunities, where individuals can explore themselves, the world, and the relationship between the two, through the visual and performing arts.

OUR HISTORY

We began twenty-four years ago as a puppetry and dance theatre troupe performing for children in NYC schools, and quickly grew in popularity to include performances of all shapes and sizes, from outdoor festivals, hospitals, private parties and functions, to shows designed for historic sites and environmental events. As choreographers and modern dancers with a young family of their own, the San Milláns began developing Cocoon’s aesthetic philosophy, which gravitated toward exploring and offering ideas they felt lacking in the types of theater and dance fed to children, has grown into our mission which now embodies every aspect of our work.

Cocoon Theatre is now a non-profit organization with a wide variety of educational opportunities for children of all ages, providing extensive Arts-In-Education programs, moving into the public and private school setting. It has grown from a small puppet company to a working studio and theater, offering classes and performing opportunities to the complete public. Cocoon Theatre still lovingly performs puppet shows and storytellings, both for the general public as well as for private events, with a repertoire now including six working shows and over 50 stories.

OUR VISION

Our vision is to secure a permanent home for Cocoon, which will create more freedom of artistic expression and to service a wider range of students, performers, and audience. Our current coal is to create a base of community support that will increase our stability and afford us to find that place; and of course, allow to us to continue working along the way. We hope to share our recognition that the arts aren't merely a luxury, but rather a fundamental need of the human spirit.
