Community Bible Church

What is now "Community Bible Church" was organized on April 27, 1984 at the home of Chet & Marge Schmidt by a small group of 21 people.  Although there was some "fear and trembling", there was little doubt in their minds that God intended for them to begin a new church in Highlands, NC.  The very first Worship Service and Sunday School was held at the Schmidt's home on Sunday, May 6, 1984 with 15 in attendance.

They agreed to affiliate with the Evangelical Presbyterian Church on June 10th, and were constituted as a mission church of the EPC on November 18th.  The first official Worship Service was held July 1st at Carolina Square.  Terry Wilkes preached that day, and continued to serve as interim pastor for several months.

Our first pastor, Robert Bryan, was called in October of 1984. The following year, Jack Alexander, Nick Marshall, Fred Rodenbeck, and Bob Smith were elected as the first ruling elders.  In the same year, a building fund was initiated, and their vision was realized two years later at a ground breaking ceremony on November 6, 1986.  CBC's first building stands on what was known as the old McKinney place, and was dedicated to the Lord in October 1988.

In 1997 we purchased a 13-acre tract of land and broke ground on September 27, 1998.  Our first worship service in the new sanctuary was held on Easter Sunday 2000 with over 500 people in attendance.

Over the course of the next five years CBC was fortunate to enjoy the service of Rev. Jerry G. Robinson as well as Rev. Herb Bailey. In 1994  Rev. Steven Kerhoulas was called to serve as the Teaching Elder of Community Bible Church. He served until Sept. of 2006.

While searching for a pastor in 2006 and 2007, our church leadership was led to examine our affiliation with the EPC as is relates to our church's actual beliefs and doctrine. Through much prayer and discussion the congregation decided to remove itself from the EPC denomination. CBC is seeking the Lord's in direction as a Non-denominational church as we continue to meet in love and unity, praising God and lifting Jesus high.

We are currently seeking God's new Shepherd to fill the Senior Pastor position. We have been blessed by the ministry of many gifted men, including Dr. Jim Sweeney, Al Whittinghill and Wallace Francis, during this interim period. We look forward to expanding and making additions as the Lord leads
