Connecticut's Beardsley Zoo

Connecticut's Beardsley Zoo has a proud history of over 80 years as Connecticut's only zoo. As an accredited member of the American Zoo and Aquarium Association (AZA) and participant in its Species Survival Plan (SSP), we are committed to the preservation of endangered animals and are actively developing strategies that will protect species and preserve their wild habitats. Through education, conservation, research and recreation, Connecticut's Beardsley Zoo provides a wonderfully wild experience for students and families.

Mission:
Connecticut's Beardsley Zoo is dedicated to acquainting a diverse public to the delicate balance that exists between living things and their environment.

Animal exhibits, plantings, graphics, and Zoo programs are to be represented in such a manner as to give the visitor a sense of awareness and concern for the intricate beauty and fragility of our planet.

This mission is achieved by a master plan comprised of the following goals.

Education, through staff involvement and training, outreach programs, workshops, lectures, docent volunteers, natural animal exhibits, informational and interpretive graphics, and research by utilizing staff, universities and other zoological facilities.

Conservation, through participation in in situ and ex situ endangered species programs such as the Species Survival Program, Zoo Conservation Outreach Group, etc. Also through professional animal and veterinary care and a comprehensive animal management policy.

Recreation, through state-of-the-art exhibit design, well-run visitor services (i.e., food and gift concessions, rides, rest rooms and parking) and to maximize the natural and park-like setting by formal and informal landscaping.

We are members of the zoo and my children love the zoo. It is small enough to be able to spend time with each animal exhibit without feeling like you spent the whole day there. Yet there is enough variety that you don't feel like you are just looking at the same thing every time you go. The new addition of tiger and maned wolf pups are great and the little ones are out playing and can be seen. The prices at the cafe aren't bad.

Love going here. Beardsley Zoo is great for both kids and adults alike. Great for a kids birthday party or just a relaxing stroll toosee the wide variety of animal life. Beardsley also has many times been the birth place of endangered species. Something awesome too see.if you enjoy wildlife at its finest or just curious about wildlife it's a great place no matter how you look at it. They also have educational seminars that are very informative.they do have a pretty decent food area also. Highly recommend. t.

Good place to spend half a day with the kids. Not too big, easy walk around the zoo. You can pack a lunch and make it a picnic, there are lots of picnic tables around.. Not many wild animals.. the tiger was the highlight obviously.. there were few cages with no animals, renovation was going on when we went..

For a long running zoo that I’ve visited since I was 4, I was a little disappointed to see that some of the animals needed some TLC as did their exhibits. Some exhibits were under construction, so it looked promising of good updates. Landscaping was needed in a lot of the areas and I was concerns about tics. I also wondered if tics were on some of the animals as they were lethargic within their living areas and looked sickly. I thought there would be more animals for the size of the zoo. Some exhibits do not allow strollers. Store clerk extremely rude indicating strollers not allowed in the stores; yet no signs indicated otherwise. Zoo needs more publicity and updates.

I visited with my family. The staff is very friendly and knowledgeable. I do not usually visit zoos as I do not like animals in captivity, however; many of the animals here and it is noted are animals that would not make it in the wild. You can eat burgers, fries, bean burgers etc in the cafe. The peacocks roam freely so you may be able to catch them spreading their wings!
