Cove Run Free Methodist Church

345 Yauger Hollow Road
724-437-1050

In October of 1893 a group known as the Pentecostal Band purchased a piece of property from James and Catherine Zebley. The church was built at this location. Construction proceeded quickly and on Christmas day 18 men came out to work on the roof. The church was soon finished and the first service in the building was in early 1894. A Civil War Veteran, David Crawford, provided housing for the workers. He is now buried in the church cemetery. The Band Workers were Free Methodists who wanted to see the Gospel spread. In 1912 some area coal mines were flooded and there was much concern for the lives of the miners. The church prayed and the miners were spared. Again in 1918 as an influenza epidemic spread, the church prayed and supported the families whose loved ones were dying. Events like these and others convinced the community that the church did care and because of Christian love, growth continued.

In 1958 Mrs. Myrtle Fullem donated the church bell. It can still be heard throughout the community on Sunday mornings. The church has undergone many renovations and expansions over the years but none quite like the one in 1995/1996. The entire sanctuary was turned around and a balcony added. If the people who built the first church could see it now, they would be surprised and we believe pleased. The church, however, is more than just a building. Its reputation for being filled with caring people has never changed. Our church is special because of the great things God has done in the lives of each person. While we celebrate today, tomorrow, we must move forward. There is work to be done and it is our time to do it. In the end, the future of Cove Run, just like its past, will not depend on anything other than our faithfulness to the Lord Jesus and His Gospel.
