Cumberland County History
Celebrating Over 250 Years of Cumberland County
Since its separation from Salem County in January of 1748 until now, Cumberland County has grown into a region of about 156,000 people who compose a multi-faceted community of diverse ethnic groups. Each of these groups have contributed to the rich cultural heritage of our 14 townships, boroughs, and municipalities. They have also significantly contributed to our continued progress. Founded on a firm agricultural base, which continues to flourish today, progress had brought the glass, canning, oyster, and clothing industries to our County. Today, Cumberland County continues to progress as retail businesses and manufacturing concerns seek the attractions of our area.
