About the Society

EBHPS is a nonprofit organization whose Board of Directors and Officers are all volunteers. Membership is open to anyone who shares the Society's commitment to the East Berlin area and its history. The active, dedicated people who make our group so strong have a common willingness to volunteer throughout the year and do the work that is the heart of our organization.

There are seven Board members and four officers. Board meetings are held once a month.  Membership meeting are conducted bi-monthly, beginning in January. The Society's newsletter, The Informer, keeps our members across the country informed about events and news of the Society.

EBHPS maintains five historic buildings including Swigart's Mill (1794), the largest restoration effort undertaken by the Society. The Log Cabin (1832), was relocated to its present site in the 1980's and is now being visited by school children from local school district's. The Liberty #1 Engine House (1892), is a project under way to display fire fighting apparatus from a by-gone era. The Church Schoolhouse is also visited by school students as is Red Men's Hall.  Red Men's Hall is the Society's meeting hall, has a research facility and museum. We have the responsibility for these structures, knowing that they are an important part of what helps to make East Berlin unique.

Raising funds to support this work requires sponsoring several large events during the year, including Colonial Day, the Historic East Berlin Antique Show and the Town and Country Christmas House Tour every other year.

Social events include a Strawberry Festival and a candlelit Christmas dinner in our 18th century mill. Planning for each event begins many months in advance and requires the ideas and time of many people. Volunteers are an important aspect of our Society.
