History

Beginning in 1950, with Baptist men praying for God's will to be accomplished, the idea for a new church in Grenada, Mississippi was born.  On May 13, 1951, Emmanuel Baptist Church was formally organized with 21 members.  Only three days later, on May 16, the Rev. Bob Taylor preached the first sermon. Services were held in barracks where the Grenada High School football field is presently located. On June 10, 1951, Rev. Harry Kellogg was called as the church's first pastor. This infant church flourished as membership grew to 350 by November, 1951.
The church then purchased property at the intersection of Highway 8 and Highway 51 and began a multi-phase construction program.  The first service in the new building was on Easter Sunday morning of 1953.  With continuing growth over the next several years and the calling of the Rev. Harry Counce as pastor in 1962, an auditorium and educational building were completed in 1963. In 1969, the Rev. Don Henderson became pastor and served until 1977. During his tenure as pastor, a new sanctuary facility was completed in 1975.
Answering the call in December of 1977, Dr. William Waddle assumed the pastorate serving until September, 1985, when he an dhis wife became Southern Baptist missionaries to Uganda. Dr. Clarence Cooper, Jr. was then called as the church's pastor on November 24, 1985.
Under Dr. Cooper's leadership, over the next decade buildings were renovated to accommodate growth, and property adjoining the church was purchased for additional parking.  With membership at 1,485, the church saw a need for two worship services, which began in November, 1995.  In April, 1996, a Long-Range Planning Committee was formed to begin exploring the future needs and potential of Emmanuel Baptist Church.
On November 8, 1998, the Long-Range Planning Committee presented a proposal to the church to purchase property and relocate the entire church facility to 245 Meadowbrook Road.  The church overwhelmingly voted 96% in favor of such a proposal to step out in faith and relocate the entire church facility.  With God's Spirit apparent, the land was purchased, and final payment was made in May, 1999.  In August, 1999, the church again overwhelming voted by 98% to begin construction of the new facility on Highway 51 south of Grenada. In September, 1999, a churchwide picnic and ground breaking service was help on the new site. On January 7, 2001, we worshipped for the first time in the new facility and on May 13, 2001, fifty years to the day that Emmanuel Baptist Church was first chartered, we dedicated the new facility to the glory of God.
On October 26, 2003 the church voted 100% to purchase 47.4 acres adjoining the property on the west and presently are anxiously awaiting God's plan for this additional property.
