About

Since 1983, the Erie Playhouse has been at its current address 13 West 10th Street, the home of the former Strand Theatre, which was built as a movie house in 1947. The 12,000+ square foot theatre has seating for 424 plus handicapped accessible seating and restroom facilities. The proscenium style stage is perfectly suited to the theatre’s busy schedule.

History

The Erie Playhouse is one of the oldest community theatres in the nation, founded in 1916 by Henry B. Vincent. Vincent, former musical director at Chautauqua, began by organizing interested friends in amateur theatrics. These informal performances were staged in the old Chamber of Commerce rooms in the Reed Hotel on North Park Row.

Opening night was January 18, 1916. A capacity crowd of 99 persons sat on funeral chairs to watch three short plays: I’m Going, Galatea of the Toy Shop and Sunset.

The shows at the playhouse are entertaining and supper fun! They are well put together and I love taking the family once in awhile. they’re so great to watch, and the shows they pick to preform each year are are wonderful and exciting. the staff is amazing and the directors are great at what they do, but I do agree that some of the actors and actresses, in youtheatre and main stage, are being “over used”. I think it would be great to see new faces playing main roles, and I love to see different people sharing the experience. I also believe that getting a role in a show should have nothing to do with you or your families connection with the directors. Your chance of getting into a show should not increase or decrease due to your personal relationship to the directors or staff. I’ve heard on multiple accounts that some children are more likely to get a main role, or any role at all, because their parents are “friends” with the directors. But over all, I absolutely love the playhouse, I just hope to see different people playing mains in the upcoming shows, and less casting due to personal Relationships.

Nice small theater. Didn't appear to be a bad seat in the house. I sat in row H and was able to see the stage extremely well. Price was very reasonable as well.

I absolutely love the Erie playhouse! It's a place where everyone is welcome! I really feel st home when I am there. One thing that I slightly dislike is the lack of variety. The children are great, but it seems like for every show staring a group of children is always the same group from the last show. Somehow it's always the same children that get the same parts. I would love it if they gave other children a chance to have a lead role rather than the same ones each time.

Very nice remodel. The sunken orchestra pit is very neat. The talent on stage is amazing! I can't wait to bring my kids to more shows here as they grow up.
