Fairmount Park Addition to the city of Canton grew rapidly during the early 1920s. Four classrooms housed in portable buildings soon were too small to house the increasing enrollment. In 1921 pupils were forced to attend half-day sessions and the next year another portable building was erected. Children in Grades 1 through 6 were taught by three teachers and the principal, Mr. Vernon Gruber, during the 1922-23 school term. The first permanent building was erected and opened for use in April of 1926.

The 1995-96 school year enrollment and the 1996-97 school year enrollment averaged around 350 students. The 1997-98 school year enrollment averaged around 390, including Preschool. The 1998-99 enrollment averaged around 375, not including Preschool. The 1999-2000 enrollment averaged around 350, not including Preschool and 13-18 students enrolled in the District Early Childhood Center's Kindergarten Center, which opened August, 1999.

Fairmount celebrated its 75th year in its present building in the spring of 2001. The school underwent numerous renovations and additions in 2001 and 2002, including an elevator, a new west side entrance, a new air conditioning and heating system, and a cafetorium.
