Mission:

Our mission at FBC Greenville is to intentionally transform people into passionate believers.

We believe this is a process every believer at First Baptist Church should be involved completely.  Everyone is involved at some level, but we want every believer here to continually be advancing through this process. We want everyone to Know, Grow, Go, and Sow!

History:

First Baptist Church of Greenville, Mississippi, was organized in 1871 with four charter members. Lewis Ball and A.D. Brooks were on a missionary pilgrimage in the Delta when they organized the Greenville Baptist Church along with Mrs. Mattie J. Butler Nelson (wife of a prominent judge), and Mr. and Mrs. A.M. St. Clair (who owned the general store on Main Street), and Mrs. William Hood of Magenta Plantation. The little band promptly called Rev. Brooks as missionary pastor.

The church had no permanent place of worship for a number of years and dealt with asuccession of missionary and part-time pastors. It is reported that the group met at the Jewish synagogue, the opera house on the corner of Main and Poplar Streets, and at the Presbyterian Church on the east side of Walnut Street. In 1884, a “church house”was completed under the leadership of Lewis Ball. This building was dedicated in 1886 by E.E. King who became the church’s first full-time pastor. The white frame structure was located on Poplar Street and served the church well until 1906.

By the early 1900’s, the little congregation had grown and decided to move the location of the church. A lot on the corner of Main and Hinds was purchased, and construction of a new building was begun under the direction of Dr. W.A. Borum, pastor. The congregation continued to grow; and in 1953, this sanctuary was demolished to make way for the construction of a completely new building.

The first worship service of the “1954” sanctuary was held on August 21, 1955 with Dr. Perry Claxton as the pastor. This is the present building with renovations having been made in 1997 under the leadership of Dr. Jay Richardson. Additional renovations to the current structure were completed in 2004.

Dr. James L. Nichols, Jr. became the pastor of First Baptist Church in June of 2004. Under his leadership, the church remains a strong and vital force in the city of Greenville. As in years past, First Baptist Church stays commited to preaching and teaching the Word of God throughout the Delta.
