First Baptist Church of Chappell Hill

9120 Poplar Street

First Baptist Church of Chappell Hill In 1982, Bob and Linda Keaton felt the need for a Bible Study in the Chappell Hill area where they lived. So they contacted a few of their acquaintances and opened their home for the meeting. The first group who met were Bob and Linda Keaton, Roy and Joy Kipp, Ted and Katheryn Byargeon, Jack Winters and a couple of Blinn students.

A few weeks later, Bob was contacted by Joe McCammon, a church planter from First Baptist, Brenham. Joe and his wife, Debbie, joined the Bible Study, and he led it for the next nine months. The group continued to grow and moved to Kipp’s Antiques, then the home of Roy and Joy Kipp.

The group was classified as a mission and continued to grow. The mission needed more space and obtained permission from the Chappell Hill Historical Society to meet in their museum. Mr. Joe McCammon became their first pastor and served for about a year.

Mr. Gary Kuntz was called to be the second pastor and came on the field on October 2, 1983. That same month, October 30, 21 persons signed the petition which was presented to the Independence Baptist Association requesting that the church become a duly constituted church. Brother Kuntz led the church for about two years.

In February 1986, Brother Chet Purdy was called as the third pastor. A month later, Mr. Ross Sinclair was called as part time Youth Minister. Under Brother Chet’s leadership, the church stepped out on faith and built out current church building. Our church provided the materials and the Texas Baptist Men Retiree Builders provided most of the labor. In thirteen days, the Baptist Men and local volunteers completed 90% of the work on the building.

Brother Purdy served the church until September 1987. He was followed by two interim pastors, Brother Duane Davis and later, Brother Charlie Matejowski.

In January 1989, Brother David Beckworth became our fourth and present pastor. As the church continued to grow, on April 25, 1993, we called Brother Terry Wilkins to be our Minister of Music, Education and Youth, and in June 2000, Trey Scheaffer joined our staff to lead our youth. Lauren Neito joined our staff in October of 2004 as Youth Intern.

This church began with the belief that Bible Study is an important part of our life and that feeling continues in our regular Sunday morning Bible Study, and in the ladies Bible Study classes, which meet on Tuesday and Thursday and Adult Bible Studies on Thursday evenings.

As we make plans for the future, we have acquired 16 acres. Through generous gifts from members and friends of the church, the property is now debt free. This property is located at the intersection of US Hwy. 290 and FM 2447. At some point in the future, we will relocate to that acreage.
