First Baptist Church Of Jamestown

306 East Central Avenue
931-879-8412

The First Baptist Church of Jamestown began when God planted a dream in the hearts of several people. It all started with a series of meetings that included music, worship, and preaching in the Fentress County Court House in May, 1930. On the fourth night, an invitation was given for membership in the new church. Twenty-two people immediately joined. The church called Bro. J.H. Delaney from Sparta, TN as a part-time pastor. Since that time, 18 men have served as pastors of the church.

The church body continued to meet in the Fentress County Court House until December 1, 1931. They then moved to the Masonic Building where they met for Sunday School and worship until November 28, 1937. Due to hard times during the depression, it took 7 years to build the church building. The building, which still serves as the current sanctuary, was built on a lot donated by Mr. and Mrs. J.G. Reagan.

First Baptist Church has sponsored four missions, which are now churches. They are Pine Haven Baptist Church (Pine Haven), Round Mountain Baptist Church (Jamestown), Park Road Baptist Church (Sharp Community), and Friends Chapel (Deer Lodge).

During the 1950's, due to the growing membership and need for classroom space, an educational building was added. In 1979, and again in 1998, the sanctuary was renovated. The current steeple, which houses the church's bells, was installed during the sanctuary renovation in 1979. The church is currently in the process of building a Family Life Center which will include a half-court gym/fellowship hall, a new kitchen, and many much needed classrooms. This project should be completed early 2007.
