First Baptist Church Waskom

185 Colquitt Street
903-687-3413

History:

On October 2, 1900 a little band of people met together at the Presbyterian church in Waskom, Texas for the purpose of organizing a New Testament Baptist Church. A lot on the corner of Lake and School Ave, was donated by Dr. Z.E. Vaughn and construction began. A year later, on October 20, 1901, the church was completed. Bro. J.D. Jamison was elected by the church as pastor. He was the first pastor of the First Baptist Church of Waskom, Texas. He served the church for two years with a salary of $200 per year.

Ground breaking ceremonies were held on July 10, 1949 for a new sanctuary (now the old sanctuary) on Colquitt St. and the first service was held on April of 1950. The church sits on land donated by a former member, Mr. John Furrh. By 1958 all debts for the building were paid in full. The bell from the old church had been moved to the new one and on the day set for the opening, the church bell was run by Roy Battle, grandson of the late Mr. & Mrs. N. W. Saunders, pioneer members of this church. Bro. W.E. Harrell was pastor during this time.

On April 26, 1992 we dedicated our new sanctuary building to God for His glory and honor. The land on which this sanctuary is built was purchased from Joe Richard Stroud. Our church has continued to grow under the leadership and guidance of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ during this time. Bro. Jim Walsh was pastor during this time and served for seven years.

We dedicated our new Education building to God for His glory and honor on May 21, 2006 under the leadership of our current pastor, Bro. Leland Crawford. The two story education building houses our Sunday school, pre-school nursery and staff office area. We praise the Lord for providing for our needs.
