About Us

The Fort Hayes Metropolitan Education Center includes two divisions: The Arts and Academic High School and The Career Center.

The high school is a magnet alternative school for students interested in an intensive academic and arts curriculum. This curriculum brings the study of arts and academics together through innovative activities. The school day is 30 minutes longer than other Columbus public schools.

Each year students apply for 180 freshman openings and are selected by lottery. All students are enrolled in college preparatory classes and in courses relating to art history, appreciation, performance, creation, and criticism. Students may choose AP classes in biology, calculus, European history, French, Spanish, studio art, English, and music theory.

The Career Center includes 18 intensive one and two year programs in the areas of Business, Health, Performing Arts, and Visual Arts. Students apply for these programs for the junior and/or senior year and come to the center for half a day from any Columbus Public High School or other high school in Franklin County, Ohio.

Career programs include: Data Processing, Clinical Laboratory Assistant, Dental Assistant, Dental Laboratory Assistant, Early Childhood Education and Care, Medical Assistant, Nurse Assistant, Optical Laboratory and Dispensing, Pharmacy Technician, Surgical Technician, Dance, Instrumental Music, Radio and Television Media, Theater, Vocal Music, Commercial Art, Commercial Photography, and Fine Arts Concentration.

Fort Hayes won a national service learning award in 2002 with our CitySERVE program which involves 40+ service learning projects. These service learning projects unify the campus and are a natural extension of Fort Hayes's committment to teach through Multiple Intelligence Theory and brain research and to advance the school's mission, "...to create expectations of excellence within students through challenging and collaborative learning..."
