Over the past seven years, the City of Gainesville Parks & Recreation Department has been actively upgrading recreational opportunities for the citizens and the thousands of visitors to the City.

Examples include:

- The construction of a 45 acre, fully irrigated soccer complex constructed by City and County work crews.

- A miniature 1/4 size replica steam engine passenger train was dissassembled and reassembled for viable transportation for 50 passengers for a tour around Leonard Park.
- Overseeing the construction of a one-mile asphalt surface walking trail funded by Texas Parks & Wildlife and the City of Gainesville.

- Organized the funding and construction of two outdoor basketball courts in B.P. Douglas and Edison Park in 2005 and 2006.

The citizens of Gainesville have expressed the desire for more recreation facility improvements concerning athletics, aquatics, and basic infrastructure.

Over the past year, the Gainesville Parks and Recreation Department has been working closely with the youth, adult athletic association, the Parks and Recreation Board, citizens, and civic organizations with regard to identifying additional park and recreational needs.
