Good Shepherd Church

915 Old Straus Road
972-291-4528

We are a church large enough to provide opportunities for spiritual growth and ministry for most individuals and families, yet small enough to get to know and serve one another.

Located in   Southwest  Dallas  County, we are a parish within the Episcopal Diocese of Dallas which is affiliated with the Anglican Communion Network and Common Cause.

Worship is important to us.  We are a church of the prayer book (Book of Common Prayer) worshiping in the Anglican tradition.

Scripture is important to us.  We believe God’s holy Word as revealed through the Old and New Testaments and in the person of His only Son, Jesus Christ.

Evangelism and discipleship are important to us.  We want to share the saving knowledge of Jesus with others and help one another grow and follow in the steps of our Savior.  We have Bible studies and small group fellowships meeting throughout the month.

Mission and ministry are important to us.  We support through prayer and offerings, several missionaries and outreach organizations.  Many of our members and regular visitors are associated with Wycliffe's Summer Institute of Linguistics.  We care about those who minister on the mission field, whether abroad or here in Cedar Hill.

History

Good Shepherd Episcopal Church, Cedar Hill was designated a mission by the Diocese of Dallas at the close of 1981, and became an official parish in 1985. The original seven families met in homes for Bible study and prayer. Soon our numbers grew and we were gathering in a renovated barn near our present location.

After acquiring the property on Old Straus Road at FM 1382, a memorable groundbreaking ceremony was held in the summer of 1984. The sanctuary was built in 1986, and the parish hall was added on in 1989. With joy and thankfulness to God, we celebrated our 20-year anniversary in December 2001. Our current rector, The Rev. Todd H. Wetzel, came to us in the fall of 2002. Gifted in many areas, he is guiding us to become better disciples, and encouraging us with a vision for the journey ahead.

Outreach ministry and support for the arts have figured strongly into the building of our parish community. Currently we are concentrating on strengthening our Christian Education program, corporate worship (the congregation as the primary choir), and in the near future, exploring short term mission opportunities.

Mindful of our past, yet "pressing on" in Christ Jesus, we invite you to join with us as we seek to follow Him in witness, works of charity, and mission.
