HUGRS is more like a small group of friends interested in local history than it is a typical 'society'.

Privately funded and dues free, HUGRS was conceived of with the goal of attracting younger citizens, new arrivals, and hopefully the  African American community, to the unique history of the 19th century Underground  Railroad.

Pictured above is a wood block artistic depiction of the Edward Hesdra family home. The Hesdra home is believed to have been a 'stop' on the UGRR  Created and funded by HUGRS members, copies are available free via an email request. 

Two descriptive, privately funded history markers, located on the 'Old Nyack Turnpike' (Rte 59) now Main St. in Nyack, were also created through the efforts of HUGRS members.

         CURRENT EVENTS

HUGRS is renovating a 19th century barn in Nyack that will depict a typical 'stop' or 'station' on the Underground Railroad.  Photos will soon be available.

HUGRS is also engaged in having a bust or perhaps a full size sculpture of Harriet Tubman created by renowned New York artist/sculptress Carmen Corrigan. Photo of the working 'maquette' will soon be available.
