History :

The Johannesburg-Lewiston school district is located just east of Gaylord and includes 310 square miles of rolling farmland and forest and lakes. It encompasses several small but growing communities. Residents in the area enjoy the convenience of nearby hospitals and shopping areas in addition to year round opportunities for recreation. Numerous ski slopes, cross country and snowmobile trails, golf courses and public beaches at area lakes are available. Sportsmen from all over Michigan are drawn to our area by the abundance of wildlife found in local woods, lakes and streams.

The communities are supported primarily by tourism and recreation, small business, forest products, gas and oil exploration and farming. The people in the community demonstrate an active interest in their school through participation in organizations such as the Athletic Booster Club, the PTA, Band Boosters and various civic organizations.

Since 1999, when Johannesburg-Lewiston Area Schools embarked on a mission of partnership with the local community, we have seen greater communication with our community and measurable accountability standards for our schools. These efforts continue to be ongoing through the District School Improvement Committee (DSIC). The board, administration and staff are committed to the continued development of a district-wide school improvement plan for the benefit of all.
