Our History

Johnson City Primitive Methodist Church is part of the Primitive Methodist denomination which began in 1807 in England as a result of the Second Great Awakening in the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries. The name was taken at an early organizing prayer meeting where it was mentioned that what they were doing was similar to the “primitive Methodists”. For them this term meant “original” as they, like the Wesley's were involved in open air preaching. The first Primitive Methodists came to America in 1829.

The local fellowship was started in 1921 as the result of tent evangelistic meetings. It was planted as a Primitive Methodist Church with its first full time pastor that year. Over the years the building has seen three building projects with the original worship area and Sunday School rooms first, followed by a larger worship area and more rooms about ten years later and a gymnasium in the sixties.

Over the years the church, like the community, has been impacted by changing times and the changing community. It is our goal to continue to be effective and relevant to people in our community from a wide range of ages, backgrounds and life needs. We see as our purpose to exist as being to love God, love God’s people and love God’s world.
