Fire District 1 Firefigthers : Johnson County Fire District #1 serves South West Johnson County, KS of over 90 square miles and a population of 15,000. We have the ONLY true Aircraft Rescue and Firefighting Apparatus in the County. In our district is New Century Airport which is now the busiest airport in the State of Kansas.

Through the consolidation of Edgerton Community Fire Department, Gardner Rural Fire Department, and Johnson County Fire Rescue in 1992 Fire District #1 was born. It was through this combination that the service to the community began its steady upward climb. Three separate entities brought together to combine the best of what they had to further serve their community.

The community Fire District #1 serves encompasses approximately 100 square miles and a variety of environments. We are the primary Fire Department for the city of Edgerton which has a population of nearly 3,000. We also serve the unincorporated areas surrounding the city of Edgerton and the city of Gardner.

This consists primarily of farmland and a rural population of approximately 7,000 residents. We also service the busiest airport in Kansas at New Century Air Center. In addition to air traffic, New Century has an extensive industrial park and office complex with a daytime population of approximately 5,000 people.

In addition to this, we also provide selected fire protection through an Inter local agreement with the city of Gardner. Gardner is a fast growing city with a population now of nearly 12,000. Perhaps one of our greatest challenges comes through our coverage of nearly 13 miles of Interstate 35. This has been a significant contributor to our call volume.

This wide range of protection areas is cause enough for the Fire District to be extremely dynamic. We currently have the only true Aircraft Rescue and Firefighting vehicle in the county. We also equip all of our front line engines with extrication equipment to deal with the many rescue possibilities that face us through the highway and the industrial complex.

We maintain four grass fire fighting rigs and three tankers. This allows us to help combat the problems faced in our rural environments. In addition to this, we provide BLS from our engines that are staffed with EMTs.
