Introduction And Purpose

Presented in the following pages are Standard Operating Guidelines (SOGs) which are to be used by members when contemplating a standard type of operation.

The purpose of this text is to establish behavioral guidelines for members, new and old. This is not meant to replace company by-laws. Instead, it is to be used as a reference for any questions concerning company procedures, regulations, and expected behavior as a member of the company.

These SOGs are intended to assist members in accomplishing the mission of the organization:

The mission of the Kingsford Union Volunteer Fire Department is to protect the lives, property, and environment in Kingsford Union and surrounding areas through prevention, public education, emergency response, and non-emergency services. We will maintain the highest level of response readiness to deliver fire fighting, emergency medical and rescue services in a safe, competent and caring manner, whenever and wherever requested.

It must be pointed out, and stressed, that the most important rule of conduct is common sense. Because the situations and circumstances are so varied in the emergency services, certain rules and regulations of conduct cannot necessarily be followed in the strictest sense, but some must be altered according to the circumstances. These guidelines are available to inform members of the direction their decisions and actions should follow.

Unique to most organizations, Kingsford Union Volunteer Fire Department is composed of members with different backgrounds and values, but joined together in the common cause of providing a valued and outstanding service to the community. Keep in mind that every member's personal conduct and behavior reflects on the company as a whole and that it only takes one thoughtless, careless, and probably selfish act to destroy the fine image that has taken many years and much hard work to establish.

It is sincerely felt that the following pages will help in directing the correct course of action, but it is the individual member who makes the final decision.
