Mission

The Lakes Region Community Services Council (LRCSC) was initially established in 1975 as the Lakes Region-Twin River Human Services Coordinating Council in Laconia, New Hampshire. Its organization was a grassroots effort by local citizens who felt that better planning and coordination were needed for the provision of a variety of human services. The Council received its first major funding from the New Hampshire Division of Welfare, in order to plan for Title XX services. At this same time, they also received a grant to plan services for those living in the region who had a developmental disability. The Council's first staff were hired in 1976.

About Us

In 1980 the New Hampshire Division of Mental Health and Developmental Services announced its intent to establish Area Agencies throughout the State of New Hampshire. Because of its interest and involvement with the developmental disabilities service system, LRCSC made application to become the Area Board for Region III. This designation was approved for the corporation, Lakes Region Community Services Council, in August 1981, with a service area of Belknap and Southern Grafton Counties. It is one of twelve area agencies in the state designated to serve individuals with developmental disabilities.

Throughout the 1980s, LRCSC experienced rapid growth due to the gradual but steady deinstitutionalization of the Laconia State School, which once housed more than 1000 residents of the State. With the State School's closing in January 1991, community services provided by LRCSC continued to expand.. Those services now include early intervention, family support, resource coordination, residential services, employment supports, and leisure activities..
