Lake Wisconsin is part of the Wisconsin River system created by the dam in Prairie Du Sac. The dam began construction in 1915 and was completed sometime in 1924. The Merrimac Ferry which

Chester Mattson the second settler on the site of the village of Merrimac, obtained charters to provide the service. In 1924, after the creation of Lake Wisconsin, Columbia and Sauk counties took over the ferry and the original "Colsac" was born. On April 6, 1963, the "Colsac II" was open for business as the "free ferry". The trip is a mile and about 10 minutes long. The ferry runs 24 hours a day during the months that the lake is not frozen. A new ferry, "Colsac III" will be completed in the next 2 years.

From a favorite hunting and fishing ground of the early Indian tribes in the area, it is now a popular tourist destination for boating, fishing, camping, hunting and all family adventures. The area has campgrounds, resorts, motels, taverns, and fine dining to entice almost any vacationer. Every season is spectacular and will provide memories for a lifetime. Lake Wisconsin is 9500 acres and has 57 miles of shoreline. Depth varies to a maximum depth of 40 feet.
