Lumber City Farm Day Festival

Farm Day was originally started in the 1950's. Everyone looked forward to the streets being closed to traffic with fun things happening such as chicken calling contests, hog-calling contests, sack races, catch the greased pig, beauty contests for teens and the one teenage boys loved- pie eating contests. It got a little message sometimes. Farm Day always ended with a square dance with local musicians and a caller..."All join hands and circle left then swing your corner lady". Farm Day continued for several years but times changed and it was dropped for other projects.

In early 1995, Brenda Powell said, "Let's have Farm Day again. I remember that it was so much fun."  Virginia Hand agreed and they became co-chairs for the now 3-day festival which is held on the weekend following Labor Day.  It was trial and error for a while, but we have succeeded.  We begin planning for the next Farm Day at the first meeting following the Farm Day just held.

The purpose of Farm Day is to bring the community together, to provide entertainment at low or no cost to the community, to give children and grandchildren good memories of their youth and it is also a way to help finance other projects throughout the year.

Farm Day is financed by selling advertisement to local businesses, through vendor fees, by sponsoring activities such as breakfast, 1 mile and 5K races, cake walks with homemade cakes, sale of cook books, featuring our local recipes, sale of Farm Day T-shirts and of course we always accept donations.
