Historically the Marshfield Fairgrounds has been the regional site where farmers brought the best of their crops and animals each year to the fair organized and run by the Marshfield Agricultural and Horticultural Society (MAHS), established in 1867. So it is only fitting that a farmers' market would be hosted on its grounds and by the same non-profit organization. In 2006 MAHS director Karen Biagini took the initiative to start up the Marshfield Farmers' Market. It began as a summer market, outdoors with a handful of vendors. Some of these founding vendors continue to participate yearly... Cretinon's Farmstand, Sunrise Gardens, and Jeanette Mac Kenzie (affectionately called "The Plant Lady"). Karen brought in live music and Ramshackle was the most frequent band to come and play. They still consider our market their "birthplace" of sorts. Then in 2010 Karen boldly offered to extend the season for the very heartiest, offering a monthly winter market. These were held inside a 4H barn where the wind was kept at bay for 3 hours while a few local vendors offered their farm goods and prepared foods to the most loyal of customers. It was cold and just large enough for a few vendors but it served its purpose.
Later that winter the market was moved to an improved and year-round location utilizing the space under the historic grandstand. This space offers agricultural displays, a cleaner and brighter environment and larger vendor spaces. In the summer months it expands to include the outside area for an indoor/outdoor market experience sheltering the vendors and customers from those summer showers and windy afternoons.
